Week one – Potty Training
One of the most important factors and in fact one of the hardest places in training a new or old puppy is training your furry friend to NOT potty in the house. The best time to potty train a dog is when you have time, it’s always understandable to have jobs school or hobbies but potty training a puppy requires a lot of time and patience. Puppy pads can be useful if you are leaving your dog home for some of the day, I recommend a gate or a secluded area on hard floor not carpet. Dog crates are a good option as well, it’s important to get a good size of crate for your dogs while still being mindful of how much your furry friend will be growing. Your going to want your dog to have enough room to lay down all the way and sit up straight. I highly recommend puppy crates to certain circumstances and are not to be left in all day. Make sure your puppy is always let out before leaving the house to prevent accidents and immediately after arriving home. Potty training in the summertime is easier for students like me or people who have time during the day. It’s important to take your dog out at least every two hours in order to prevent potty accidents and right before bed time (that is where crates or gated areas come in hand) and first thing in the morning. If you hear your pup whining and crying at night that can be a sign that he/she has to go to the bathroom. If you notice a continuation throughout the night your puppy is probably just making excuses for you to let him/her out if their crate.
– Tour puppy is about to have an accident when he/ she is smelling a certain area (mostly carpets or rugs) when your see your dog to this immediately stop the behavior, rush or pick up your dog to the nearest puppy pad or outside is a better option to show that if he or she has to use the bathroom they have to do it outside.
